Formed as a two piece in 2006 in Charleston, SC, Run Dan Run expanded to their current line-up of three after an acquaintance heard their demos and wanted to be a part of the project. In the six years since their inception, the band has released a full-length album and an acoustic EP, and just released their second full length, entitled Normal, three weeks ago.
The trio makes wistful indie pop that is reminiscent of Broken Social Scene and Margot & The Nuclear So-and-So’s. There are a lot of elements at work in the band’s music – horns, crashing drums, quirks of noise. But unlike Broken Social Scene, Run Dan Run retains an air of quietness about their music. If you don’t listen hard enough, you’re going to miss the lyrics, sung in almost a whisper. And it’s in that space that the band is at their best.
This track, “Lovesick Animal” is proof of that fact. It builds to a glorious conclusion, with muted trumpets and a springtime sensibility to it. There’s an air of regret to the song, an awkward sadness in the confession that the singer has “been a glutton all (his) life.” But it works itself out, and grows much more confident as it goes along. And it’s one of the more adroitly catchy songs I’ve heard in a long time.
Normal is available for purchase through the band’s Bandcamp page, where you can also get yourself a physical copy of it (only on CD).
