When you think of Low, you probably think of certain hallmarks. You think of the slooooow tempos and the simple arrangements. And you most certainly think of the vocals of husband and wife duo Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. Those vocals lie at the heart of the trio’s best known works. “Try to Sleep” follows directly into those well-worn footsteps. It is nothing earth-shattering or mind-melting, it just represents another solid entry into band’s nearly 20-year old catalog.
“Try to Sleep” is the first single off the forthcoming C’mon, which will be released on April 12 via Sub Pop. It is the band’s first album since 2007′s awesome Drums and Guns. The song kicks in with a solid mid-tempo guitar line and accompanying glockenspiel. Then you get the tremulous vocals of Sparhawk and Parker.
It is ironic to think that the song is entitled “Try to Sleep,” yet it features such a hazy, dreamy quality to it. Either way, it just gets me more excited for the forthcoming LP release. Drums and Guns is one of my recent favorites, especially the standout track, “Breaker.” And waiting four years for new material can seem like an eternity, but this single signals that the wait is well worth it.
