[mp3] Introducing // Slow Down Molasses (NxNE Recap)

slow down molasses [mp3] Introducing // Slow Down Molasses (NxNE Recap)

I’m sure we have all had the experience of discovering a  band at a live show, excitedly heading over to the merch table to buy their newest release, and heading home to listen to the record only to be sorely disappointed that the strengths of that live show wasn’t present on the physical disc. Well that definitely wasn’t my experience with the band Slow Down Molasses. On their second full length release, the band manages to fit all the elements of their compelling live show, and a whole lot more onto that 12″ (or 4.7″) plastic disc.

Team Tympanogram had the opportunity to catch the band at an unofficial afternoon BBQ at the NxNE festival this past weekend in Toronto (Photo Credit: Tiana from Ride the Tempo). Playing as a sextet, the group filled the cramped courtyard with synths, percussion, and a wall of guitar, three guitars to be exact. On their new record, Walk Into the Sea, the band expands into a seven piece and beyond, and joining the wall of guitars is an assortment of brass and strings. Probably the most striking attribute of the record is its dynamic range. What was one moment a delicate boy/girl indie folk ballad rapidly turns into a massive pop ensemble crescendo. What exactly do we have here: chamber shoegaze, indie noise folk? I don’t know exactly, but it seems that, in addition to one of the coolest city names in the world, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan has one of the more exciting young bands in Canada at the moment. In addition to the band’s usual charms, the track makes clever use of a typewriter as a distinctive percussive element.
