Old Tapes [mp3] Introducing // Old Tapes

When I’m asked about it, I tend to describe Rochester music as trending more toward the harder end of the musical spectrum; lately, however, I’m finding that’s not as much true; not unlike the rest of the current musical landscape, we are starting to have our share of dance-centric bands making local inroads.  Joywave are undoubtedly the best known to come out of the Flower City recently, but with local duo KOPPS (post on them forthcoming), and now Old Tapes, I’m liking our burgeoning little synth-y community.

Old Tapes is the product of a couple of local DJs and one brother, and they’re planning on releasing an EP “early this summer” as well as playing a couple of shows around the area, as well as heading further south to DC and Philadelphia.  Born out of the brother/sister duo with a “super lo-fi” sound, the group expanded to its current three and cultivated a more well-rounded, electro-tinged sound.

This particular track, the wistful and honest “Farewell,” feels like an album opener, giving all us listeners a preview of what’s going to be coming next.  And with that in mind, we have much to be excited about.  (You can head over to Old Tapes’ Soundcloud page for a few more tracks to whet your proverbial whistles as well.)
