This may be labeled as an introducing post, but the Meligrove Band have been an active band since 1997. A combination of geographic location and bad luck has kept this group from bringing their highly appealing brand of power pop to the popular consciousness of American indie rock audiences. It’s a peculiar thing how some Canadian acts can have so much trouble crossing the northern boarder, but despite clear successes in their homeland, these Mississauga, Ont. musicians have yet to receive much recognition outside of the great white north. Admittedly this situation was not helped by the fact that their label, V2 Records, was purchased by a major and scuttled before they could properly promote 2006′s outstanding Planets Conspire. It also didn’t help that a serious mechanical failure of the group’s bus, caused the band to cancel their entire USA promotional tour for 2010′s excellent follow-up, Shimmering Lights. However, this adversity hasn’t kept the band down for long and they will will be making an appearance at NxNE at Rivoli Wednesday, June 15 @ 10PM.
The Meligrove Band makes ornate, intricate pop songs that speak to a group who is very much at home in the studio, but have a driving high energy sound that seems a perfect fit for the live setting. Both sides of the coin are on ready display on “Halflight” – a standout track from the new record.

If one needed to provide a one sentence description of the band, the best choice would probably be “catchy as hell.” The Meligrove band make the kind of music you only need to hear once, to have bounce around in your head for hours. The eclectic instrumentation, propulsive guitars and massive hooks of “Halflight” are are a good indication of the approach the band takes throughout the record, which can be streamed in its entirety on the group’s Bandcamp page. In fact, the entire band’s catalog is available for streaming or purchase there, so head on over and have a listen to one of the greatest Canadian bands you probably have never heard. Right now the NxNE show is the only performance on the bands calendar, but hopefully sometime soon this resilient group of musicians will get a chance to complete that ill fated USA tour.
