“Electric Sex” is the iTunes genre The Jet Age of Tomorrow assigned to their recent (New Year’s Eve 2010 to be exact) release, The Journey to the 5th Echelon. This offshoot of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them provides another unexpected and equally awesome branch in this strange family tree. Hal Williams and Matt Martian comprise this beat-making duo. Electric sex is an appropriate name for the beats these two cook up. They are much funkier and sound more organic than those delivered by Left Brain and Tyler.
“Welcome Home Son” is the first single from the 5th Echelon. The song features guest verses from Casey Veggies, an OF associate, and Tyler, The Creator, mastermind of Odd Future. Mr. Veggies delivers a strong performance, but as most OF releases demonstrate, you cannot suppress the weird charm and uncomfortable humor of Tyler.

“Erection when I see you squirm,” Tyler offers during his verse. This is one of the tamer lines as he goes to typical Tyler places in his section of the song. It should be noted Tyler’s still goes to the places where we expect him to go at this point. His verse about murder, and other assorted misdeeds, stands in stark contrast to the trippy, jazzy vibe The Jet Age of Tomorrow delivered by the beat.
The Jet Age of Tomorrow also have a strong release from early 2010 entitled Voyager, but 5th Echelon delivers on most of the promise that the earlier release hinted at. At its core, The Jet Age of Tomorrow shows the true variety of Odd Future. People will typically gravitate to the shocking. But The Jet Age of Tomorrow shows the well-rounded awesomeness of OF. Odd Future is more than shock and gore. These dudes have serious talent.
