[mp3] Introducing // Ghost Heart

These guys out of Grand Rapids, MI were a great surprise.  Driven by thundering tribal drums, Ghost Heart puts a different spin on indie pop, creating their own brand of music that strikes a nice balance of psychedelia and vocal hooks that’ll make you want to chant along with them.

The band has an upcoming full-length – titled The Tunnel – that will be released January 29 on Friction Records.  Out of the three tracks that I’ve heard off of the album, “No Canticle” is the standout.  The song clocks in at just under eight minutes, and while it’s not officially broken up into a three-piece suite, there are noticeable segments throughout the song that make it seem as if it is.

The introduction contains explosions on the drum kit, setting a consistent rhythm for a song that never lacks any excitement.  The vocals come in at around 1:30, with background chanting partnering with the toms and bass drum to maintain the song’s tribal vibe.

At around 3:00, the song begins a segue into the main vocal section.  Electric guitar is added to the drums, bringing a sort of crunchiness to the section, before the rest of the band comes back in on vocals.  This drives the music forward to bring the track full-circle – ending with heavy drums mixed with a hint of keys that allows “No Canticle” to fade off into the next track.
