This will be the first post I have written this month that isn’t directly related to the North by Northeast music festival, but it isn’t completely unrelated to our recent trip to Canada’s most prestigious music festival. I guess that is the mark of a great festival: it not only introduces you to some quality new bands, it altogether changes the trajectory of your musical journey. The band Chairs Missing came with the highest recommendation of fellow San Deigo act Writer. They seemed almost surprised when we asked them what the best SD band we had never heard of was. Little did they know that we were more than happy to let them do a bit of our job for us, and I must say I’m happy with their work.
There are many a band working in the arena of reverb heavy psych rock these days. Most of the acts operating from this musical palette seem intent on ushering the listener down a cramped sonic alleyway filled with blight and darkness. Chairs Missing, however, takes a far different approach, using their warm echos to carry the listener out to a meadow of flowers and sunshine. This is the kind of music one expects to hear from the city where summer never ends. The approach is readily on display on the track “The Corner” – the first track from their 2010 debut EP When, Now.

The project is primarily the work of Paul Remund from the also excellent and former blog feature artist, Tape Deck Mountain. Head over to their Bandcamp site to download their debut EP for free. I think you’ll find it goes well with your summer day. The band has a few Southern Californian dates on their schedule at the moment, and hopefully the band has the chance to take their pleasing psychadelic sounds further out on the road in the future. In the meantime, I strongly recommend checking out Remund’s other band, Tape Deck Mountain.
