We recently received a submission from a duo called Black Coffee & Stephee Pie. Upon further examination, I discovered that this duo is actually a collaboration between French electro-ambient artist Black Coffee & Cherry Pie and Los Angeles surf siren Steffaloo. The work created by the two artists is truly something to behold in my opinion, so I feel that in order to fully understand their work, it would be better to first examine the solo acts. This post is focused on Grenoble, France musician Albert Murienne a.k.a. Black Coffee & Cherry Pie.
The rhythms of Black Coffee & Cherry Pie trace a fine line between instrumental acoustic folk and electronic ambiance, depending on which release you listen to. The High Mood Swing EP is more lighthearted and peppy, while The Low Mood Swing EP is much more mellow and down tempo. Then there’s Nights at the Mono which could be described as a mix of the two, but it’s really more of a piano-based album that serves as the outset of Murienne’s songwriting.
No matter which of Murienne’s albums you listen to, you’re sure to be caught up in the atmosphere that is sealed within every measure of every hook contained in his work. This is definitive mood music, perfect for a rainy Sunday morning with a mug of black coffee. Too bad I was sans the cherry pie at the time of the listening session. That would have been the equalizer.
