As we gear up for the inevitable frigid winter, we look to songs that contain warming melodies – the kind that can replace the warmth and glow of kindled flames for those of us with shoddy heating or lacking a fireplace. To achieve this, look no further than The Attic Sleepers, a duo out of Copenhagen that is as familiar with the winter sting in the Nordic country as we are here in Western New York.

The duo’s debut was just released on October 15. It’s a three song EP titled You Are the Wave, and it’s full of intricate acoustic melodies and easing rhythms that can keep you comfortable as you are. From the opening trill and vocal harmonies on “I Still Moan” to the percussion hard-strummed stomp on “Ghost Behind the Door,” The Attic Sleepers have broken away from the traditional indie folk outfit and crafted a sound of their own. The music of Mathias Barfod Boll and Matias Knigge Laursen contains similar elements to other folk acts, but their songs have a rich structure with harmonious layers piled on top of one another to create triumphant movements which contain stretched out buildups throughout their durations.

If you enjoy “Ghost Behind the Door” below, be sure to download the EP for whatever price you choose at their Bandcamp page. If the three songs aren’t enough to tide you over, The Attic Sleepers will be releasing their first full-length album in 2012 with an estimated timeframe around spring or summer. With these songs as a precursor, the next release is sure to be worth getting a hold of.
