I’m not certain where I first heard Good Old War, but their easygoing indie folk is pretty universal. (And I somehow have both their albums in my collection? I was unaware.) My first run in with the band was their infectious track “Coney Island,” from their debut album, and I didn’t give their second release much more than a cursory listen when it came out in June of 2010. I’ve undoubtedly been depriving myself.
I bring the Philadelphia band up because they recently released a new single from their upcoming album, and it’s been rattling around in my head like I’ve known it all along. “Calling Me Names” isn’t a wild departure from what fans of the band have come to expect; it’s a song with an open road sort of feel to it, like you need to get it out on a long stretch of empty highway to really see what it can do.
The song is from the band’s forthcoming third album, called Come Back As Rain, which is available for pre-order through the band’s website in various packages which will ship around March 1, while the album is actually out on March 6th.
