After releasing a handful of outstanding singles last year, Tennis had the blog world primed for takeover. And then, with the release of their debut album – Cape Dory – this past January, the buzz they’d created kind of fell flat. The album wasn’t bad by any stretch, but they didn’t seem able to keep up their twee electronica ambiance over the course of 10 songs.
And then the now three piece released a new single a couple of weeks ago – a cover of Brenda Lee’s 1964 track “Is It True?” The single puts Alaina Moore’s voice on display a little bit more; it’s a little more forceful than the tracks on the album, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s faithful to the original’s spirit, although it does lack the pre-Yardbirds Jimmy Page that Lee’s version can boast, although that’s hardly anything they could remedy.
The Denver trio is on tour for the rest of July in Europe before heading out on a North American trek in September. You can catch all the dates over at their website.
