After releasing their stellar debut – Midnight Folly – in 2009, and subsequently touring with The Avett Brothers, Auld Lang Syne has been relatively quiet. Sure, they play (stellar) shows every so often around Rochester, and they head outside of the city to tour a bit when they can, but their easy brand of timeless Americana promises much more.
That veil of silence, however, was lifted a bit yesterday with the release of two new songs from the band via their Bandcamp page – both of which can be had for whatever price you’re willing to pay. They’re indicative of what the band does best – allowing their compositions to develop organically, unforced.
Both tracks build and fall as easily as breathing, and were apparently recorded in the basement of an old stone mansion here in Rochester, where the word is that their next album will be made as well. Even though these songs are new, there’s a history present here – in where the songs were recorded, in how they sound, in their style. “How We Say Farewell” stretches out to nearly seven minutes, but there’s not a second wasted of it. It’s gorgeous material.
If you’re around Rochester and have nothing to do tomorrow evening, Auld Lang Syne is playing Bug Jar with Roadside Graves. Doors for the show open at 8, music starts at 9. Even if you do have something to do tomorrow, cancel your plans and come out anyway.
