I’ve been messing around with this app for the iPhone called TuneIn Radio that basically streams radio stations from around the globe; it’s a pretty cool thing if you’re into hearing what stations in Africa sound like or the music they play, or if you’re feeling nostalgic for that one station you loved in college that you can’t hear anymore because you moved away. Regardless, one of the stations that is available right now is called CMJ 2011, so I put that on at the end of last week, just to remind myself of just what I was missing.
A couple of bands came up while the station was streaming caught my attention, including Denver’s Flashlights with their song “Apple Trees.” The song fits in nicely with the retro-sex vibe of Jensen Sportag, although Flashlights is a little more hazy in the vocal department, sounding like they were recorded under water somewhere. It’s a relaxing, electro summer type jam that transcends its seasonal appropriateness.
The track is from Flashlights’ most recent EP, Hidden Behind Trees, that was released this past June when the weather was more suited for it. You can get it digitally, as well as on transparent purple vinyl through the folks at Morning Pony. It’s limited to 500 copies, and it also comes with an 11×17 poster of the alternate album art.
