After releasing various singles over the past couple of years, Fergus & Geronimo’s first full-length album sways from odd to pop to rock throughout its eleven songs/half-hour or so, and never without interesting layers and textures. The Denton, Texas duo’s influences are equally unique – Frank Zappa and Sparks are listed as important – and the resulting album is a great listen. This track, “Powerful Lovin’,” is a mournful, soulful wail of a song, and it represents what the band is best at: exploring the stranger elements of retro psychedelica while making them feel modern.
The pair is out on a month-long tour in support of Unlearn, which was released last month through Hardly Art. Those dates include a string of shows at next month’s SXSW. Head to their site to check out the complete range of cities they’ll be visiting.
