Donovan Woods’ last album, The Widowmaker, made it up to number 14 on our Best of 2010 list of album based solely on its position on my personal list. Even when I listened to the album a couple of weeks ago it was still an affecting experience. That’s a credit to Woods’ timeless songwriting, universal themes, and fantastic voice. There are no weak links on that album.
So when I saw a new track from the Toronto based Woods over at I Guess I’m Floating yesterday, I got a twinge of excitement. Called “Put On Cologne,” the track is as earnest and honest as anything else I’ve heard from him, filled up with hand claps and the type of longing that Woods is adept at describing. His talent lies in his simple, straight ahead manner, and that’s not lost on “Put On Cologne.”
As it turns out, the track is from a forthcoming EP, which I think is titled Don’t Get Too Grand (if the information included in the track’s meta tags can be believed); if it makes it out in the next week or so (which I doubt), it would probably end up somewhere on my Best of 2011 list like its predecessor. But, more than likely, it will find a place somewhere in next year’s list.
