Will was recently wondering about bad band names and where they came from. On the flip side, here’s a band name that is almost too obvious. You know what you’re getting into as soon as you hear it, the element of surprise is all but gone. But that is fine: The Deep Dark Woods aren’t really in it for surprises. In fact, once you get the fire crackling, pour yourself a glass of whiskey and throw their recently released The Place I Left Behind on the stereo, you can slink back into a comfortable chair, and there is little within the music that is going to get you to move from that spot. Sit back, relax, and enter The Deep Dark Woods.

Your first impression is that this band has a southern charm and probably hails from the mountains of Tennessee or thereabouts. But these woods are much deeper and darker than that. These guys are from the middle of nowhere; sorry, I meant the middle of Canada: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Find it on the map and you’ll instantly have a pretty good idea what it must be like there. Quiet, secluded, and gorgeous. This music fits that setting like a glove. (It is also possible that Saskatoon is a bustling industrial town, in which case you can disregard this entire paragraph.)

Most everywhere I have seen written about them lists them as alt-country. Though I’m not really sure what is so alt about it; the band sounds pretty country to these ears. The genre definition of country has completely shifted toward pop. But if you like your country honest with heavy doses of pedal steel and depression, check these guys out.

They’re offering up the album’s lead track, “Westside Street,” but I can tell you the album only gets better from there. So if you’re the least bit intrigued, be sure and check out the rest. Also, there are a few live sessions available to sample from both HearYa and Daytrotter. One of the two HearYa sessions is an all cover set, including a haunting rendition of “Peggy-O,” also available below.
