Prior to hearing their new song, “Late Night Bikes,” I hadn’t heard of New Mexico band Capybara. As it turns out, they have an interesting back story – as all bands should. The four members of the group all left their homes in various corners of the States – Portland, Brooklyn, Kansas City – and moved to Taos, New Mexico to form the band. After touring and backing up Daniel Johnston at a festival in Kansas City, the band settled in to record their second album, Dave Drusky, which will be released on February 7th.
Now that everyone is up to speed on the band’s doings before now, let’s get into the song. “Late Night Bikes” is an immediately arresting track, filled up with lush instrumentation and Joel Wrolstad’s distinct vocals. Perhaps its due to living in the heart of the American Southwest, but there is a much larger feeling to the band’s music – a sort of breathless wonderment that would work best soundtracking your drive across the expanse of the continent.
Dave Drusky is a name that means nothing to me, but when I put it in Wikipedia, I find that he is a member (pun intended) of the heavy metal band Goblin Cock who goes by the stage name Bane Ass-Pounder. I don’t know if/how this is where they get the title of their album, but it’s hilarious to think about while listening to “Late Night Bikes.”
Bane Ass-Pounder Dave Drusky will be released on February 7th.
