Not that I’m a frequent patron of piano bars, but sometimes I wonder about the musicians who play at those type of establishments. They are obviously talented, but I have to think that playing covers for drunken assholes has to be unfulfilling creatively. Maybe I’m wrong, but Jessica Lanza is supporting my theory – at least in part.
After spending a few years doing the cafe/coffeehouse scene around Toronto, Ms. Lanza went into the studio to harness her voice, and the resulting EP – entitled Little Sister – is revelatory. It’s obviously jazz influenced; I’m reminded of the better parts of Jamie Cullum when I listen to it. Under the descriptors on Bandcamp, she has ‘healing’ listed along with ‘folk’; I’m not sure if ‘healing’ is meant to be a description of the genre or it’s intended effect on the listener, but it doesn’t particularly matter. The EP is a musical salve.
Little Sister is available for free download through Lanza’s Bandcamp page, and she has a couple of dates listed in Ontario, which you can check out at her MySpace. Get the EP, grab a glass of wine and relax.
