Santa Monica, apart from being the title of that Everclear track from my high school days, is also home to new Domino Records four-piece Chief. After forming in NYC, the members went decidedly against the grain and returned to their hometown to devote time to the band; from the sounds of this lead single, it seems to have paid off. The band is currently on a limited tour around the US, showcasing fine harmonies, crisp drumming and excellent songwriting.
There’s a longing to their lyrics, a need to escape; in the background throughout the track, it sounds like a clock is ticking away, accompanying the narrator’s description of his need to leave town to escape a now ex-love. It’s a typical tale, and Chief retells it well.
The band’s debut album – Modern Rituals – will be released August 17th via Domino. Until then, catch them on their limited US tour, or at a few dates in Europe towards the end of the month. Dates are at their MySpace. Pre-order the “Night & Day” single here as well.
