If you haven’t been paying attention to it, Levi’s (yes, the jeans people) has been putting out a string of kick-ass covers as a part of something they are calling Pioneer Sessions. To this point, they’ve had Nas, The Swell Season and She & Him as part of the Sessions, each doing covers of songs that they found personally influential.
The most recent cover is Dirty Projectors doing a Bob Dylan track from Dylan’s John Wesley Harding. Regardless of what side of the fence you come down regarding Dirty Projectors’ original tracks (or Bob Dylan covers) – this is excellent. It’s pretty faithful to the original; it does away with the harmonica parts, and it lacks Dylan’s unique singing style – but there are parts where Longstreth sounds as if he has directly channeled a younger Dylan.
Check out the rest of the Pioneer Sessions here, and keep an eye out for future covers from the likes of The Shins, Passion Pit and Raphael Saadiq. There’s one every few days or so, and to this point, they have been well worth the time.
