1000 Minutes: Dave #41

Seeing as how Andy trumped me with the Ra Ra Riot mention in his own 1K, I will not be discussing my love of “Oh, La” in this particular edition. Though I did want to mention something I read on Twitter this past week. It was in regards to the curious practice of certain blog writers including on a resume that a song they had written about had reached number one on Hype Machine’s popular list. This idea is so ridiculous to me I don’t even know what to say about it. I don’t really know what to write on my own resume in terms of this blog, but I certainly would never write that we have had songs reach the top of Hype’s popular list. Yet maybe I’ve been foolish and I should write everything this blog achieves on my resume. Either way, go here to learn more about our 1000 minutes project.

84. The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize? (mp3) from Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (3:32) [Time Remaining: 656:05]

I heard “Do You Realize” the other day and was immediately prepared to include it in this week’s post. I listened to it and then realized, no pun intended, that I could not include it without also writing about “Fight Test.” I have never been a huge Lips fan and own only a small part of their eclectic catalogue, yet I could likely listen to all of the band’s records and not find an album I would enjoy better than Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. Upon first hearing Yoshimi as a slightly disillusioned youngster with no proper aim in life, “Fight Test” was some pretty heady stuff. Sure, it’s a concept album about robots and “the Dane Cook of martial arts,” but it also delves deeply into ideas of death and mortality. These two songs in particular are eminently relatable, which is some feat considering they concern beings that can’t feel.
