Aloe Blacc – Femme Fatale

femme fatale 7 Aloe Blacc Femme FataleIf it weren’t for Gauntlet Hair’s storming of my Top 25 played of the year, I have little doubt that Aloe Blacc’s soulful “I Need a Dollar” would still have the top spot in that playlist.  Despite his song’s now second tier standing, I’m still looking forward to his new album – Good Things – which is due out at some point this year from Stones Throw.

In an effort to appease me personally, the label recently put out a new track from the album – the slower, burning cover of Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale.”  Translated from French, the term literally means “deadly woman.”  While it certainly doesn’t carry the connotations of a monster or demon with its modern definition, a femme fatale generally has ulterior motives, and uses her sexuality and charm to get her way.

Mr. Blacc has obviously escaped the wiles of such a woman, and has graciously shared his story with us.  Unfortunately, without any identifying characteristics, we’re left to find out who she is for ourselves.  My money’s on Minka Kelly.

Get yourself the vinyl of the track via Stones Throw here.

Tennis – Marathon

Tennis Tennis MarathonDave and I are flying across the country this morning, so we are leaving you in the capable hands of our scheduled posting.  We have stuff set through Sunday, and Dave should be back on Monday to start things up again.  At least that’s how the plan is in my head.  I hope everyone has a fantastic week; we’ll be in and out of touch via Twitter regarding what antics we’re getting into.  As a bit of a send off, here’s a track that’s been talked about a lot on the blogs of late.  I’m not sold on it, but I can hear why people are.

Tennis is the moniker of a Denver husband and wife duo who started writing music to document their experiences sailing around the Eastern Seaboard.  It seems like they’ve captured what that would be – at least to me.  I’m no sailor, but if I were careening around the coast in the summer, this is probably how I would sound too.

Florence and The Machine – Cosmic Love (Short Club Remix)

l d0b19e24c726040c5819fdf96ca52184 Florence and The Machine Cosmic Love (Short Club Remix)The original of this track has slowly become my favorite Florence and The Machine song since I got my copy of Lungs last year.  I listen to it constantly because I run to it; it’s upbeat and keeps me focused on the task at hand, which is good for me because I generally dislike running.

And then I heard this remix by Short Club, and it’s a completely different song.  Gone are the soaring, wrenching vocals from the original, the immense feeling of the music.  It’s all been scaled back, and I’m not certain that’s a good thing.  It starts off like it’s going to be even more haunting (although I’m not sure that’s even possible), with an acoustic guitar, but then it morphs into a kind of middling recreation of the track.

You’ll have to listen for yourself.  Don’t take my distaste for it as gospel.  It might be that I’m so enamored with the original that any new spin would be met with similar disdain.

Best Coast – Boyfriend

4683776798 cdf5b6e4e0 Best Coast BoyfriendThe first sanctioned track off of Best Coast’s forthcoming album Crazy For You has hit the blogs.  It’s Dave’s favorite track from the album – or at least, the one he most wanted to hear when we saw Best Coast last week at NXNE.  And, the more I hear it, the more I’m inclined to agree with that sentiment.  It’s breezy and longing, and is pretty definitive of what Best Coast is going to deliver on their debut full length.

My personal enjoyment comes from the track’s almost naïveté; I know it’s not, but the throwback aura that hangs around the music makes it familiar but at the same time.  Pre-order some kind of bundle of the album over at Mexican Summer.  Crazy For You drops on July 27th.

James Pants – Driftwood

new tropical James Pants DriftwoodIn lieu of posting about the week’s new releases (since there isn’t much to speak of), we’ll just tell you to check out the Maps & Atlases James Pants Driftwood and Wolf Parade James Pants Driftwood albums.  Or, more appropriately, those are the albums we’ll be checking out.  So if you want to be like us, that’s what you should be getting.  And with that, let’s get to something that’s been rattling around in my head for the past few days:

Not knowing much about James Pants other than the fact that he has a great name, makes his label home at Stones Throw and that Mayer Hawthorne covered one of his tracks, I’ve been surprised by this quick, cyclical track; it’s not something I generally tend to like: this choppy, looping banger, but it’s burrowed itself in and I can’t stop listening.

It’s almost July.  Turn this one up this weekend and feel the heat.  Pants’ new EP, New Tropical, is out now.  Get it on vinyl or download through Stones Throw.
