I know that this song is not new, but it is relatively new to me, and it may be new to some readers as well. I happened to see the video for it and the song is pretty catchy so I popped it up here. I’d never heard of either Deadmau5 nor Rob Swire, but after doing a minimal amount of research I learned Swire is the singer from Pendulum, so this collaboration makes some sense sound wise. And Deadmau5 is intended to sound like ‘Dead Mouse,’ which I never would have guessed.
I don’t know much about PUNCHES, like whether it’s essential for me to capitalize their moniker or not. There apparently are four of them in the group, they hail (like most these days) from Brooklyn; but above all their remix of Au Revoir Simone is worth the capitalization faux pas. It’s funky, laced with strings and horns, and lives up to the high standard of the original while giving it a completely different – and equally valid – feeling.
The group had their debut show this past weekend in their home borough; the track in the video below is from that show, and it demonstrates how talented the group is outside the realm of remixing; “Feeling Right” is eminently danceable. Their MySpace is a little barren, as they seem to just be getting started, but there is another track available there as well. Look for good things in the future.
Around the blogs, HEALTH have been getting an awful lot of buzz. In terms of this particular track, we’re over a week behind the places you may have heard this first, but it’s compelling enough to deserve a post here, which is how you know it’s actually worth your time.
The band was among the first wave announced for the upcoming NXNE Fest, which might not be of note for many, but since Dave and I are headed to Toronto for it, we’re looking forward to seeing them, although it’s on the first night, just when we’re arriving, so we may not be able to catch them.
The track is from the band’s impending release on June 22 – just after their appearance in Toronto – and it features remixes of their entire DISCO album; as such, it is appropriately titled DISCO2. The album features remixes from the likes of Crystal Castles, Tobacco and more. “USA Boys” is a summer night, dance floor slow jam, and is the only new track on the upcoming album. With a band name like HEALTH, it has to be good for you.
Check out the rest of the band’s tour dates at their MySpace.

Not a particularly great week for new music; personally, we’ll probably check out the Two Door Cinema Club release, but there isn’t much else that jumps out. I bought a Jesse Malin album once, when I was big into Ryan Adams because I’d heard that they were friends, and sounded similar. And I was sorely disappointed. Maybe he’s better now than he was when The Heat was released. Or maybe I’m better. I guess I should break it back out and try again.
As always, there are a couple of tracks for your listening after the list to get yourself in the spending mood. We hope everyone’s week is going fantastically thus far.
I love the blog RCRD LBL (and you should too), but I don’t keep up on it as well as I should. The other day when I was perusing its recent additions, I found this free EP from the band ARMS. Todd Goldstein, the man behind the project has expended the moniker from just him to a full band. Goldstein was also in the now-defunct band Harlem Shakes, but this is a different sort of output than Harlem Shakes’ indie pop. The EP is a little more sonically ethereal and expansive, and it precedes an eventual album, which, according to the band’s MySpace, will be called Summer Skulls.
Get a couple of the tracks below, and get the rest of the EP via the band’s website. It’s good. It’s free. You should get it.

Basically, it sounded like a cool name for a blog intended to be primarily about music. We’d both had other blogs previously, but over beers it was decided that more damage could be done as a joint venture. And here we are.
We share a passion for the undiscovered and under-appreciated, and hope that you’ll be able to find something you love as well.

I like music. I can't describe how I came to like the music I do, because I don't know how or why, I just do.
Many years ago, Napoleon's brother, my great-great-great-great-great-great Grandfather, came to America. He was asked his name on Ellis Island while being processed as an immigrant. Not understanding English, he was under the impression that he was being asked how he had arrived in the new land. So he turned around and pointed at the sea vessel and said, 'LaBarge.'

I come by my music taste of my own free will. My friends listened to 2Pac, my parents to contemporary Christian and me? Sunny Day Real Estate. I can’t explain it.
